College Description: SDM. College of Physiotherapy
Keeping in with the prime objective of the SDME Society of providing value based education and social service, the SDM College of Physiotherapy, Dharwad was established in the year 1996 to address the ever growing demand by the society for quality health care professionals delivering quality health care through quality infrastructure at an affordable cost to alleviate human suffering through healing hands.
The Institution since its inception has garnered tremendous amount of goodwill from the public which is reflected in its unprecedented growth statistics. A new Super-specialty Block capable of housing 400 beds to accommodate the increasing patient population from all walks of life. The Management feels a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction noting that its services are reaching and helping the suffering and needy segment of the population.
Students who have graduated from the Physiotherapy College are bringing laurels to the Institution through their conduct, character and practice of value based medicine.

Mr. K. Meheboob Shiek, BPT Final Year has been awarded the Sports Merit Scholarship for his achievement in All India Inter University Athletic Championship & South Zone Inter University Cricket Tournament for the year 2017-18 on 27th October 2018.

Ms. Naik Devata Uday, BPT II year student has participated in the 6th Senior National Dueball Championship for Men & Women 2018 held at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Una, Himachal Pradesh from 25th to 27th June 2018 organized by Himachal Pradesh Dueball Association and Una District Dueball Association.

Ms. Shifa Bagban, BPT Final year student received the Second prize at our Republic Day celebration held on 26th January 2018 for creating Collage on the topic of “Rights of People living with HIV/AIDS” held on 1st December 2017 organized by the Department of Community Medicine.
Mr. Niraj Kerkar, BPT I year student (2016-17 batch) has secured the fourth place in RGUHS Inter Collegiate Single Zonal Cross Country Race (M) held at BMCH & RC Chitradurga on 01.08.2017.
Mr. OmkarDeshpande, BPT III year student has secured Four Gold Medals, Eight Silver Medals in RGUHS Single Zone Inter Collegiate Aquatic Championship held at Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS), Mandya on22nd August 2017.
Mr. Niraj Kerkar, BPT II year student has secured Gold Medal in 800 Mts running, Silver Medal in 400 Mts running, and Bronze Medal in 200 Mts running and Ms. Devata Naik, BPT II year student has secured Gold Medals in 400 Mtr Hurdles and Javelin Throw, Silver Medals in Long jump and 100 Mtr Hurdles in the RGUHS Inter Collegiate 18th Athletic Championship held at Alva’s Education Foundation, Moodbidri from 21st to 23rdNovember 2017.

Ms. Nivedita Kadambi, MPT I year student won I Prize in the PG Research Platform Presentation and Ms. Deidree Rodrigues, MPT II year student won III Prize in PG Poster Presentation at National Physiotherapy Conference - “Physio Accord 2014” held on 17th and 18th January 2014 in Bangalore.
Ms. Shree Mannari, BPT - IV year student won I prize and Ms. Navami Upadhyaya, BPT - I year student won II prize in state level singing competition held in Hubli organized by Akhila Bharath Madhva Mandal and Dr. Gangubai Hangal Music Foundation.
Mr. Mantosh Kumar Singh, BPT – IV year student has ranked 1st Place in Asian Level Taekwondo Championship organized by Asian Taekwondo Union held from 5th January 2014 in Thailand.
Ms. Ekta Desai (Final year BPT) student of our College participated in RGUHS Basketball (Women) selection trials held at M.S. Ramaiah Medical College, Bangalore from 30th October to 2nd November 2010. She wasselected for RGUHS Inter University Basket Ball team and attended coaching camp at M.S. Ramaiah Medical College, Bangalore from 10th to 12 November 2010.Further she participated in Inter University Basket Ball tournament held at Ajmer (Rajasthan).She has been selected for RGUHS Inter University Basketball (Women) team since last three year.
Mr. Shashank S. Hullatti Intern was selected to represent our college in RGUHS Inter Collegiate Annual Athletic Meet 2010-11 held at Alva’s Education Foundation, Moodbidri from 01st to 05th November 2010. Mr. Shashank secured 5th place in 5000mts running.
Graduation Ceremony was held along with Medical College on 20th January 2012.Ms. Juhie Patel was conferred upon “Smt Surpiya and Shri. Harshendra Kumar Gold Medal” for the “Best Out Going Student – BPT”.
Children’s Day was celebrated in the Paediatric Physiotherapy OPD on 14th November 2018 from 10 am to 1 pm. Around 40 children along with their parents attended the event. Children participated in the fancy dress event arranged in the OPD. Parents also shared the experiences of their child’s treatment. Gifts and sweets were distributed to the children.
Raas Garba Nights 2018 was held on 27th October 2018 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, organized by our college students at Physiotherapy College.
On the occasion of World Physiotherapy Day 2018, a free Physiotherapy consultation and treatment camp was conducted on 7th September 2018 at SDM Poly clinic, Vidyanagar, Hubli from 9.00 am to 2.00 pm.
On the occasion of World Physiotherapy Day 2018, Poster Presentation on the theme "Crucial contributions of the Physiotherapy Profession to keep people independent and mobile" was arranged on 8th September 2018. Poster Presentation was inaugurated by Medical Director Dr. Niranjan Kumar. Smt. Padmalatha Niranjan, Mr. Saketh Shetty, Dr. Satyashankar, Dr. S.K. Deshpande , Dr. Sunil K M, Dr. Kiran Hegde, Dr. Nithin Marathe, Dr. Mayur Sherkhane, Shri V.G.Prabhu and Physiotherapy Staff and Students were present.
The certificate distribution ceremony of Poster presentation arranged on the occasion of World Physiotherapy Day 2018 was held on 15th September 2018 at 4:30 pm.
Dr. Sudhir Bhatbolan, Assistant Professor gave a radio talk for ‘SDM Doctor’ program on the topic ‘Bells palsy’ on 18th September 2018.

Dr. Shweta Bhatbolan, Assistant Professor, 2 MPT students, 4 Interns and 3 BPT final year students have conducted CBR camp for disability screening and assessment in association with NGO Operation Equip India, Hubli at Ingalgi village, Kundgol taluk on 23rd August 2018. Total 227 children were assessed for any abnormalities and disabilities in 6 Anganwadis.
Art of Living YES!+ workshop (Youth Empowerment and Skills Workshop) follow up and meet with the students was conducted by Ms. Eesha Buwa, Faculty of Art of Living on 18th August 2018 from 5.00 pm to 7.00 pm.
Dr. Salima Bijapuri, Associate Professor, 1 MPT student, 15 Interns and 2 BPT final year students have conducted an awareness and treatment camp for the elderly at Anand Ashram, Salakinkoppa village, Dharwad on 4th August 2018. Total 32 oldage people were assessed and given talk on prevention of falls and care to be taken in the oldage.
The 1st Alumni Meet of SDMCPT was organized on 14th & 15th July 2018. The inaugural function was held on 14th July 2018 at 10.00 am at Ishaavaasyam auditorium. Dr. Niranjan Kumar, Medical Director, SDMCMSH was the Chief Guest and Smt. Padmalatha Niranjan, Executive Director, SDMCMSH was the Guest of Honour. Principal, Vice Principals, DMS, AMS, FD, Dy. Director (Purchase) and HOD’s of the various departments of SDMCMSH were attended the function. A Felicitation Program for Teaching and Non-Teaching staff who were working since 1996 in the college and a Career Guidance lecture for UG, PG students and Interns were arranged. On 15th July 2018 various cultural programs and photo sessions were arranged. Dr. Rajeev K Lal, Professor and Dr. Amit Hosur, Alumni were the organizing secretaries of the 1st Alumni Meet. Total 63 Alumni were attended.

Dr. Salima Bijapuri, Associate Professor, 3 Interns and 15 BPT final year students have conducted CBR camp for disability screening and assessment in association with NGO Operation Equip India, Hubli at Pashupatihal village, Tq- Kundgol on 24th July 2018. Total 150 children were assessed for any abnormalities and disabilities in 5 Anganwadis.
Dr. Salima Bijapuri, Associate Professor and 02 MPT I year students and 11 BPT final year students have conducted CBR camp for disability screening and assessment in association with NGO Operation Equip India, Hubli at Haliyal village, Hubli on 11th June 2018. Total 30 children and 28 pregnant women were screened. Antenatal & Postnatal awareness talk was given to the pregnant women by the staff.
Dr. Shweta Bhatbolan, Assistant Professor and 02 MPT students and 17 BPT final year students have conducted CBR camp for disability screening and assessment in association with NGO Operation Equip India, Hubli at Kuruvinakoppa village, Kalagatagi on 21st June 2018. Total 135 children were screened for growth nourishment and disability in 3 Anganwadis.

Staff and Students have participated in the International Yoga Day Celebration held on 21st June 2018 at 7.30 am at SDM College of Dental Sciences & Hospital grounds.
The Annual Cultural Fest & Sports week ‘VERVE 2018’ was conducted from 16thto 24th May 2018.
BPT Interns & MPT II year students have sent their profiles online and attended telephonic interview for placement conducted by Health Care at Home (HCAH), a leading home healthcare service provider in India.

Dr. Sharmila Dudhani, Associate Professor delivered Clinical Lecture on the topic “Cervical Muscles Retraining for Neck” on 17th February 2018 at 8.30 am at DRH auditorium.
Dr. Salima Bijapuri, Associate Professor and Ms. Sejal, MPT I year student & 3 Interns (Ms. Subodhini, Ms. Roma, Ms. Pranali) visited to Akshaya Patra, Food Processing Industry, Raipur to observe the working posture of the employees on 28th February 2018 as a part of Education Industrial Visit.
On the occasion of World Physiotherapy Day, Dr. Salima Bijapuri, Assistant Professor and BPT/ MPT students and Interns have conducted “Screening and Awareness Camp on the risk factors and prevention of falls in the elderly people” of the community in association with the Rotary Club, Navanagar and Veershaiva Samaj Samiti Sanghatan on 9th September 2017 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at Navanagar, Hubli. More than 50 elderly people were attended and extremely benefited from the camp.
One day free Physiotherapy treatment, Assessment & awareness Camp conducted on 24.01.2017 at RHTC Yadawad. Dr. Salima Bijapuri, Assistant Professor, PGs, Interns & IV year BPT students deputed to conduct the camp and give Physiotherapy awareness talk.
Dr. Salima Bijapuri, Assistant Professor and BPT final year students have deputed for CBR camp at Haliyal village on 4th March 2017. A small lecture was arranged on ‘Women’s Day’ to create awareness about women hygiene and health issues and five disabled houses were visited and necessary changes and modifications were told.
Dr. Poornima P. S, Associate Professor and BPT final year students have deputed for CBR camp in association with NGO Operation Equip India, Hubli at Chabbi village on 7th March 2017. More than 25 disabled people were assessed in the camp.
Dr. Sanjay Parmar, Professor and BPT/ MPT students and Interns have deputed for Paediatric Screening Camp at Special School for Mentally Retarded Children, Nekar Nagar, Old Hubli on 3rd March 2017. Different Physiotherapy related problems were assessed and also conducted an awareness and screening camp for teachers.
Dr. Poornima P.S, Associate Professor and BPT/ MPT students have deputed for Paediatric Screening Camp at Kurdikeri and Karadikoppa villages near Varur, Hubli on 1st April 2017. 195 children were assessed at 3 Anganwadi’s of the villages.

Induction programme of the 17th batch of BPT and 10th batch of MPT students was held on 19th October 2012 at DRH Auditorium of SDM College of Medical Sciences and Hospital, Manjushri Nagar, Dharwad.
A Blood donation camp was conducted on 6/9/2012 by the S.D.M. College of Physiotherapy in SDMCMS&H. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Ravi Savadatti in the presence of staff and students of the Physiotherapy College, who also participated by donating blood during the event.
Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT):
Physiotherapy is an independent profession, which deals with prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of various musculoskeletal, neurological, chest and other medical disorders by means of electrotherapy, exercise therapy and manual therapy. As Physiotherapy has got important role to play in different types of medical and surgical cases, the course is structured around subjects like Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Biomechanics, Exercise Therapy, Electrotherapy, Orthopaedics, Neurology, General Medicine, General Surgery for learning by the students.
Physiotherapy being a very developing and enterprising course, it has got excellent employment opportunities in speciality hospitals both in Government and Private sectors and also in academics. Physiotherapists can do their private practice by opening their own clinics or doing home visits, which does not need any major investment. It has got excellent career opportunities both in India and abroad. Specialization can be obtained by doing Master's degree (MPT) after completing the graduation course. The students can take up Ph.D. after completing their Masters degree.
A Candidate seeking admission to first year Bachelor in Physiotherapy (BPT):
Should have passed two year Pre University examination conducted by Department of Pre-University Education, Karnataka State, with English as one of the subjects and Physics, Chemistry and Biology as optional subjects. The candidate shall have passed subjects of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology as optional subjects. The candidate shall have passed subjects of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology individually also.
Shall have passed any other examination conducted by Boards/Councils/Intermediate examination established by State Government/Central Government and recognized as equivalent toa two year Pre University Examination by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences/ Association of Indian Universities (AIU), with English as one of the subjects and Physics, Chemistry and Biology as optional subjects. The candidate shall have passed subjects of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology as optional subjects. The candidate shall have passed subjects of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology individually also.

Master of Physiotherapy (MPT):
The Post Graduate (MPT) course has also been started during this college from the academic year 2003-2004 with the affiliation of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore.
The Masters Degree in Physiotherapy is a two year program consisting of classroom teaching, self academic activities and clinical posting. In the first year theoretical basis of physiotherapy is refreshed along with research methodology and biostatistics. The students are rotated in all areas of clinical expertise during this period. They are required to choose their study for dissertation and submit a synopsis. During the second year the students will be posted in their area of specialty. They are required to complete and submit their dissertation. The learning program includes seminars, journal reviews, case presentations, case discursions and classroom teaching. Some of the clinical postings are provided at other reputed centers in the country in order to offer a wider spectrum of experience. The students are encouraged to attend conference, workshop to enhance their knowledge during the course of study. University examinations are held at the end of first year
and at the end of second year.

Goals of Course
1. Preparation of a postgraduate student towards his/her professional autonomy with self regulating discipline at par with global standards
2. Formation of base of the professional practice by referral as well as first contact mode using evidence based practice.
3. Impartation of research basis in order to validate techniques & technology in practice to physiotherapy.
4. Acquainting a student with concept of quality care at the institutional as well as the community levels.
5. Inculcation of appropriate professional relationship in multidisciplinary set up, patient management and co partnership basis.
6. Preparation of students to address problems related to health education and community physiotherapy.
7. Practicing the concept of protection of rights of the community during referral as well as first contact practice.
8. Incorporation of concept of management in physiotherapy.
9. Experience in clinical training and undergraduate teaching partly.
10. Providing the honest, competent and accountable physiotherapy services to the community.
Candidates who have passed B.Sc. (PT) or BPT degree from institutions where the mode of study isa full time program, with minimum 3½ years / 4 ½ years duration from this university or any other university in India or abroad as equivalent with not less than 50% of marks in aggregate and have completed 6 months of compulsory rotating internship in Physiotherapy Colleges recognized by RGUHS - Karnataka are eligible. Candidates who have passed BPT through correspondence or Distance Education program are not eligible.
Candidates who have passed BPT through Bridge Course or through Lateral Entry after completing their Diploma in Physiotherapy from institutions where the mode of study is a full time program from this university or any other university in India or abroad as equivalent with not less than 50%of marks in aggregate and have completed 6 months of compulsory rotating internship in Physiotherapy Colleges recognized by RGUHS - Karnataka are eligible. Candidates who have passed BPT through correspondence or Distance Education program are not eligible.
The candidate may even have to go through a selection procedure involving an entrance examination and interview before being selected for admission. The selection of the candidates for the course will only on the basis of rules and regulations of the University.
Obtaining Eligibility Certificate
No candidate shall be admitted for the postgraduate degree course unless the candidate has obtained and produced the eligibility certificate issued by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka. The candidate has to make the application to the university with the following documents along with the prescribed fee.
1. B.P.T. or B.Sc. (PT) provisional / degree certificate issued by the respective university.
2. Marks cards of all the university examinations passed.
3. Completion of internship certificate.
4. Proof of SC/ST or category-I as the case may be.
Candidate should obtain the eligibility certificate before the last date for admission as notified by the university.
Other than Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Banglore, candidates should apply for Eligibility certificate.
Separate hostel facilities for Boys and Girls are available within the college campus. The hostel facilities are consisting of recreation room, phone facility, provision for indoor and outdoor games and even reading room. A common mess is also available apart from various other eat outs in and around the campus.
The college has good collection of national and international editions of books in its library. It also subscribes many national and international journals to keep the students and faculty members abreast with recent developments in the field of physiotherapy. There is provision for audio visual and online E-mail facility.
The Physiotherapy outpatient department is situated in the SDM Medical Hospital campus at Dharwad. It is a separate wing of about 5000 sq.ft. area with all latest Physiotherapy modalities. The College of Physiotherapy is also housed in SDM Medical College building premises with excellent provision for Research activities providing an ideal environment for education of the students.
Code of Conduct
A student is expected to maintain a very high standard of etiquette and conduct during the period of his stay in the college. Disruption in discipline of any kind is liable for punishment, which may range from suspension to even termination from the College. Ragging is strictly prohibited in the College. There exists an anti-ragging committee in this college to prevent such incidents.
RAGGING is not only an antisocial activity but also a criminal offence. SDM Campus is declared a ragging free zone. The management and the students have strived hard so far to maintain this status. Any activity which may be construed as ragging will attract a severe action including expulsion and criminal charges. The students and their parents/ guardian are made to give an understanding every year towards anti-ragging commitment. Also the campus not only has Anti-ragging Committee as per regulatory body requirement, which includes the local police and others, but also has constant vigil by the staff and security.
Non-vegetarian food is NOT allowed in the Campus
SMOKING, GUTKA, PAN, ALCOHOL AND DRUGS are BANNED
KEEPING MOTOR CYCLES AND MOTOR CARS by students staying in Campus is not allowed. Instead BICYCLES AND UMBRELLAS are provided free for use within the Campus
Health of students is taken care by medical checkup, vaccination regimes and all students have to take SDM HEALTH CARE cover at the time of admission.
Attendance:Every student is expected to have 100% attendance in theory, and practical subjects and clinical training. In case of any unavoidable circumstances or sickness the student can avail an exemption of only 20% of attendance in any subject after providing the proof for absence and applying to the Principal in this regard in advance. A candidate with less than 80% of attendance in any subject is not eligible to appear for the University examination for that year.
There will be two examinations in a year, to be conducted as per notification issued by the University from time to time. First, Second, Third and Final Examinations of BPT course shall be held at the end of 1st year, 2nd year, 3rd year and 4th year respectively. The particulars of subjects for various examinations
The examination for main subjects shall be conducted by the University and for subsidiary subjects by the respective college.
Criteria For Pass
A candidate is declared to have passed university examination in a subject, if she/he secures 50 %of the marks in theory and 50 % in practical separately. For computation of 50 % marks in theory, the marks scored in the internal assessment [theory] shall be added to the University conducted written and viva voce examination and for a pass in practical, the marks scored in University conducted practical examination and internal assessment [practical] shall be added together.
For a pass in Subsidiary subjects, a candidate shall secure 35% of the total marks prescribed for the subject. The marks obtained should be sent to the University 15 days prior to the commencement of University examination.
I Year [5 main subjects] :
A candidate who has failed in I year is permitted to carry any two of the five main subjects and shall have to pass these subjects before appearing for the II year examination.
II Year [5 main subjects]:
A candidate who has failed in II year is permitted to carry any two of the five main subjects and shall have to pass these subjects before appearing for the III year examination.
III Year [5 Main subjects]:
A candidate is permitted to carry any two of the failed subjects and shall have to pass these subjects before appearing for the final year examination.
Subsidiary subject - may be carried over by a failed candidate but shall have to pass the same before appearing for the final year examination.
Schedule of examination
The examinations shall be known as MPT Part-I Examination and MPT Part-II Examination. A student shall register for all the papers of a year when he/she appears for the first time. If a student fails in the first attempt of MPT Part-I Examination, the student may reappear for the supplementary examination which will be conducted within 4-6 months of declaration of results. If a student fails in the first attempt of MPT Part-I Examination, or the supplementary examination for MPT Part-I thereof, he/she will continue the course with his/her batch. However he/she can register and appear for MPT Part-II Examination only after clearing the MPT Part-I Examination. If a student fails in the first attempt of MPT Part-II Examination, the student may reappear for the supplementary examination which will be conducted within 4-6 months of declaration of results. If a student fails in theory and/or practical of MPT Part-I or MPT Part-II Examination, he/she has to appear for all the papers of each examination in both theory and practical respectively.
Criteria for Declaring As Pass in University Examination
A candidate shall be declared pass if he / she secures a paper minimum 40% of maximum marks in each paper and 50% of maximum marks in theory aggregate and secures a minimum 40% of maximum marks in each practical and 50% of maximum marks in Practical / Clinical and Viva- Voce aggregate.
